Family weekend in Pays-d’Enhaut – things to do

Pays d’Enhaut is a Swiss region in canton Vaud comprising the municipalities of Rossinière, Château d’Oex and Rougemont. It’s located in a Sarine river valley and each of the villages offers not only beautiful alpine views, but also a variety of things to do in every season. We visited on a warm August weekend, with our baby and dog – and spent two full days exploring its nature, relaxing, eating good food and learning new things!

Here are the things to do in Pays-d’Enhaut – and also the reason why you should visit:

Spend some time in Rougemont

Rougemont is classified as one of the most beautiful Swiss villages. It is full of beautiful old chalets with sculptured fronts and is nestled in the heart of the river valley, so you get the idyllic prealpine views everywhere you look. Definitely worth a visit! I fell in love with its charm and now only wonder how beautiful it must be also in winter time.

Go to the top of Videmanette

We got local products in Chateau d’Oex and then took the cable car up to la Videmanette to enjoy some family time there. There are a lot of hiking routes (which I am sure are incredibly scenic), fixed rope routes (for climbing enthusiasts) and a restaurant serving local food (for the ones who want to enjoy their food with incredible views). We chose to sit in a grassfield on a slope and have a picnic, but if we go next time – we’ll do THIS hike.

Eat local food

It’s worth making a stop and trying out the delicious foods, made in this region. Either at picnic (like above – with alpine cheese and local meat that you can shop in Rougemont or Chateau d’Oex) or in one of the beautiful restaurants – often located in charming chalets. Here are my recommendations:

Le Cerf in Rougemont for dinner – beautiful views from their terrace + super tasty alpine food with a modern twist.

Le Chalet in Chateau d’Oex for lunch – it’s a restaurant and a cheese dairy in one – you can try traditional Swiss dishes and watch a cheese making demonstration over a wood fire as done in the old alpine chalets (super cool to do with kids!)

Go for a walk along the Sarine river

It’s an option for those who want to take it easy – such a scenic and nice walk starting at Pont Turrian – the oldest suspension bridge in Romandy Switzerland – leading to the Ramacle Waterfall along the river. Really a relaxing and easy walk.

Learn the local craft

We took some time to discover the art of paper cutting. It’s a part of the living traditions of the canton of Vaud and one of the things that Chateau d’Oex is famous for. We spent one hour learning how to cut and making our own “art” – such a relaxing and fun way to spend your time + very informative as you learn about the tradition of the region. You can make an appointment to the paper cutting initiation (link to more info <a href="http://&lt;!– wp:paragraph –> <p>We took some time to discover the art of paper cutting. It's a part of the living traditions of the canton of Vaud and one of the things that Chateau d'Oex is famous for. Just relax

Aside of all the fun things we did in this weekend – we also found some time to take it easy and unwind. We stayed at the Hotel Valrose and our room had a big terrace, where we could watch the sunrise over a cup of tea and have a movie night with a glass of regional wine.

We also squeezed some spa time in on Sunday morning – at the Hotel Le Rougemont & Spa – and it was lovely. It’s the only Nuxe Spa in Switzerland and aside of the treatments, you can also swim at the pool or just use their sauna.
